El Malecón is the waterfront promenade of Havana. Around sunset, teenagers come to hang out and jump into the sea from the rocks below the promenade wall. This photo was taken from up the wall. The view to me presents not only the youthful, daily act of playing with the sea, but also the longing for freedom and opportunity of Cubans. People living on the island are the ones having the bear the daily consequences of political and economic decisions taken both by their own leaders and the American response to the Cuban regime. Surrounded by water, the sea is both the frontier that separates them from a freer, wider world, and the element that carries the potential to connect them with it.
