This unique canvas print is an expressionist representation of the connection between the people of Havana, the sea and a yearning for freedom.
El Malecón is the seafront promenade in Havana, Cuba. Around sunset, when the heat lets up over the city, people hang out, walk, and teenagers jump into the water. The original photograph I took from the stone wall of the promenade was digitally altered here, to not only capture the scene, but also the show the meaning of the sea for many Cubans. It is the frontier that both separates them from and connects them with the outside world. It is the element that carries the past, and the potential for a different future.
